Winston sees

four but says five When Looking at the film version of this book, with see images of the meadow where Winston went with Julia repeatedly. From the begining as O'Brien states, Winston always knew this would happen. The first time they meet in the rented room Winston says that the true betrayal is not confessing, but if the pary really makes him change the way he feels about Julia. Julia says that this is not possible, they can not change your thoughts, but the 'Though Police' are already listening. In the end O'Brien knows the only way for him to break Winston is to get him to hate Julia. When Winston is semi-unconsious, his mind retreates to the serenity of the meadow. Only when hislove for Julia is dead, will O'Brien be satisfied. O'Brien even uses Winstons own writing against him. It was Winston of, course that first said "freedom is being able to say 2+2=4" In the end, Winston, a dead man, loses this freedom willingly.
