The Crater Lake
I convinced Sam it was time to drive a few miles up the road and then I blacked out for a considerable time. I woke up somewhere around the turnoff to Crater Lake national park. The turnoff being a full 60 miles from the park. We were in the west; big miles. Sam and I lunched on Denny's, which was slightly out of our budget at the time, but we had promised ourselves one full meal a day, and at least one motel stay during the trip. The road up to the top of the caldera was at first littered on the sides with little tufts of snow that soon gave way to clumps, moved on to ground cover, and finally ended with towering drifts that were eight feet high on either side of the road. The other tourists thought we were mad for lugging Buddha up the side of the drift to see the lake.
